Celebrating International Women’s Day: Recognizing Women in Business

Posted by Carolyn Snoke on

March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a global celebration dedicated to honoring the accomplishments of women in social, economic, cultural, and political spheres. This day not only acknowledges the achievements of women across history but also serves as a powerful reminder of the progress still needed to achieve true gender equality.

Since its inception in the early 1900s, International Women’s Day has been a rallying point for women’s rights movements, advocating for workplace equity, voting rights, and equal opportunities in education, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Today, it continues to inspire individuals and organizations to amplify women’s voices, champion their successes, and work collectively toward a more inclusive and equitable future.

The Global Influence of Women
Women have played an essential role in shaping the world as we know it. From spearheading scientific discoveries to leading social movements, their contributions have driven progress in every sector. Pioneers like Marie Curie in science, Rosa Parks in civil rights, and Malala Yousafzai in education have left indelible marks on history, proving that women’s impact extends far beyond individual achievements—it transforms entire societies.

Beyond activism and advocacy, women are also redefining leadership in business, politics, and technology. They are founding companies, leading Fortune 500 corporations, and driving innovation in industries that were historically male-dominated. However, challenges still exist, making it vital to continue pushing for greater representation and opportunities for women at every level.

International Women’s Day is not just a time to reflect on progress—it’s a call to action for continued advocacy, empowerment, and support for women in all aspects of life. This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, highlights the urgency of advancing gender equality and inspires individuals and organizations to take meaningful actions that drive progress.

Supporting Local Women-Owned Businesses
While internationally recognized brands serve as inspiration, it’s equally important to support and celebrate women entrepreneurs within our own communities. Women-owned businesses play a vital role in local economies, fostering creativity, generating jobs, and enriching our neighborhoods with unique products and services.

As a woman-owned business ourselves, we understand the dedication, resilience, and passion it takes to build something meaningful.

This International Women’s Day, we are proud to shine a light on local women-owned businesses. Whether they are boutiques, restaurants, wellness services, or creative studios, these businesses thrive with community support. By choosing to shop local, we help empower women entrepreneurs and contribute to a stronger, more diverse business landscape. Below, you’ll find a collection of inspiring businesses and the personal stories of the incredible women behind them.

Local Women-Owned Businesses Spotlight

Pataskala Customs / Warrior Promos - Carolyn

We founded Pataskala Customs in 2018 after facing an unexpected job loss, which made us reflect on how corporate life was keeping both parents unavailable for our kids. Taking a leap of faith, we started our own business, and it grew beyond what we could have imagined. It thrived so much that I was able to leave my corporate job, allowing us both to be present for our children. This year, we expanded even further by launching Warrior Promos, our dedicated promotional products brand. While the journey has been both challenging and rewarding, it has been incredibly fulfilling. Along the way, we’ve met so many amazing people and businesses and have had the privilege of giving back—whether through creating jobs, sponsoring youth programs, or supporting local schools. As you continue reading, you’ll meet some of the incredible women entrepreneurs we’ve had the honor of knowing over the years!

LivingWell Health Center - Valarie Langel

Starting my own women-owned business has been a life-changing journey, both personally and professionally. As a mother of two and with a husband who also owns his own business, flexibility was crucial to making it all work. I was tired of the constraints of corporate medicine, where the focus often felt more on profits than on patient care. I wanted to create a space where I could offer quality, compassionate care to my patients while also achieving the work-life balance that was so important to me. Owning my business has given me the freedom to do what I love on my terms, and it has truly transformed my life, allowing me to be present for my family while making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Common Scents Wax Co - Tabitha Frazier

Welcome to Common Scents Wax Co, a woman-owned candle business nestled in the heart of Pataskala, Ohio! I started this journey in 2017 from my home studio, driven by a simple yet powerful goal: to recreate my favorite wax melt scent after a big company discontinued it. What began as a personal quest quickly turned into something much bigger as friends and neighbors started asking if I could find their long-lost fragrances too. Growing up in Pataskala, I've always had a deep love for our community, and I’m passionate about helping to revitalize our downtown Main Street. What started as a hobby has now blossomed into a thriving business that has not only allowed me to teach others how to craft their own candle masterpieces, but also provided meaningful support for our family. My shop offers a welcoming, calming atmosphere where guests quickly become friends, and each visit is an opportunity to share the magic of candle-making while supporting local. We’re here six days a week, ready to help—just call or text to make an appointment, or visit our website to book directly! I can’t wait to share this journey with you.

My name is Ashley Green and I have a couple of side hustles and businesses. I do photography and have enjoyed this since 2011. I have met many amazing people and most importantly I created a work life balance that worked well for my family. Since then I’ve loved the idea of small businesses and have recently started teaching sourdough after learning my own mistakes. The idea of helping others through teaching, or capturing memories for families brings me so much joy as well as an extra financial stability for my family.

Elite Pest and Termite Control

I'm Jessica Sparks-a wife, homeschooling mom of three, and small business owner just figuring things out as I go. When my husband and I started this business, we didn't just want to create something for ourselves-we wanted to build something meaningful, something that would serve others and teach our kids the value of hard work, integrity, and putting people first. From day one, we told them, This is a family business! And we meant it. They help out, come to events, and see firsthand what it means to run something with heart.

Customer service is my passion-I love connecting with people, making them feel valued, and always finding new ways to make our business better. Whether it's creating a fun, engaging space on social media or brainstorming fresh ideas, I'm all in. And when I'm not working? You'll probably find me lost in a good book, learning something new alongside my kids, or serving at our church.

At the end of the day, this business isn't just about making sales-it's about making an impact, loving what we do, and doing it together as a family. And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way. - Jessica, Elite Pest & Termite

The Good Portion - Lisa Warren

God actually placed The Good Portion in my path about a year ago unknowingly. I was in the midst of a having discussion about a devotional when The Good Portion came up. Jesus always gives us The Good Portion of what he is offering. After much prayer and obedience I stumbled into making my hobby, his testimony. I love creating a harvest and goods with a skill he instilled within me. I hope to share in all the celebrations, the stories, and the relationships that each order brings. I do this out of love for baking, and my love for Jesus. Being there at home with my babies is quite the blessing too.

Ivy & Moss Photography - Felecia Williams

I am the owner of Ivy & Moss Photography, a portrait studio in downtown Pataskala. I specialize in Newborn, Children, Family and Pet Portraits. I started my business 16 years ago, after my oldest son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I started my business as a way to make extra money for fun activities and trips for my son and I, but within a year I had a studio location and my business has continued to grow ever since. I now have 3 sons, two of which have type 1 diabetes. Owning and operating my own business has allowed me to care for them when they are ill, attend their school functions and sporting events and spend as much time with my family while also contributing financially. I love the flexibility my business gives to my family while also being able to capture and provide beautiful and priceless memories for my clients.

A Diamond in the Ruff

My name is Jana and I’m the owner of A diamond in the ruff dog grooming salon in Baltimore Ohio.
I opened ADITR in 2021 while I was 23 years old. Being a business owner has been the most challenging yet most rewarding thing i could have ever done. I’m able to offer employment for some wonderful people who I consider family now as well as getting to do what I love every single day.
